Could a quick MRI catch more breast cancers in black women?
NCT ID NCT04854304
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study is testing whether a fast breast MRI can find cancers that mammograms miss in Black women with dense breast tissue. About 500 African American women who recently had a normal mammogram will get an additional abbreviated MRI. Researchers want to see if this extra scan detects more cancers and reduces false negatives, while also comparing results to similar studies in white women.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Fast breast MRI (diagnostic test)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding fast breast MRI helps find breast cancers earlier in Black women with dense breasts, potentially reducing disparities in outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with 500 participants, so results may not apply to all women. Fast MRI may also lead to false alarms or unnecessary biopsies.
