Breast MRI showdown: which contrast agent is better?

NCT ID NCT03730051

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compared two MRI contrast agents, Dotarem and Gadavist, in 300 women undergoing breast MRI. The goal was to see if Dotarem is as effective as Gadavist at enhancing breast lesions for clearer images. Participants were randomly assigned to receive one of the two agents, and radiologists graded the image quality. The results could help doctors choose the best contrast agent for breast cancer detection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
gadoterate meglumine (Dotarem) and gadobutrol (Gadavist)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that Dotarem is as good as Gadavist for breast MRI, giving doctors more options for clear imaging.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 4 study focused on image quality, not on curing or treating disease. The results may not change current practice significantly.
