New contrast mammogram may spot more cancers in dense breasts
NCT ID NCT05625659
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a special type of mammogram called contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) can find breast cancers better than the standard 3D mammogram (digital breast tomosynthesis, or DBT) in women with dense breast tissue. About 2,000 women with dense breasts will get both types of mammograms at their regular screening visit and again one year later. The goal is to see if CESM catches more cancers and leads to fewer unnecessary call-backs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) with iodine-based contrast agent
What this could lead to
If successful, CESM could become a more accurate screening tool for women with dense breasts, detecting more cancers while reducing false alarms.
What could go wrong
This is a large but still early-stage comparison; CESM requires an injection of contrast dye, which carries a small risk of allergic reaction or kidney issues. The study only follows participants for one year, so long-term benefits are not yet known.
