Could a simple stitch prevent a common complication after pancreatic surgery?

NCT ID NCT07681128

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This trial investigates whether adding a Braun anastomosis—a connection between two loops of the small intestine—during pancreatic cancer surgery can lower the risk of delayed gastric emptying, a frequent complication where the stomach takes too long to empty. About 264 adults scheduled for pancreaticoduodenectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either the standard reconstruction or the standard plus Braun anastomosis. The study aims to provide clear evidence on whether this extra step improves recovery and reduces hospital stays.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Braun anastomosis (a surgical procedure)
What this could lead to
If effective, this simple surgical addition could reduce delayed gastric emptying, shorten hospital stays, and improve recovery after pancreatic cancer surgery.
What could go wrong
Previous studies have shown mixed results, and the extra surgical step may increase operation time or technical difficulty without clear benefit.
