PET scans reveal hidden brain changes in young COVID survivors

NCT ID NCT04764721

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed study looked at 25 young adults (ages 18-65) who had severe COVID-19 and now have thinking or memory problems. Researchers used a special PET-CT scan to see if there are changes in brain activity and how that relates to lung damage. The goal was to better understand the link between COVID-19 and lasting cognitive issues.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors understand why some young people have lasting thinking or memory problems after severe COVID-19.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study with only 25 participants. It does not test a treatment, so it cannot directly lead to new therapies.
