Mind-Controlled computer: brain implant gives voice to the paralyzed
NCT ID NCT06207591
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a brain implant that records brain signals to help people with locked-in syndrome control a computer. Two participants will have 128 electrodes placed on their brain surface. Researchers will train them to use the system at home for one year, aiming for accurate and fast communication without needing a researcher present.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
brain implant with 128 electrodes
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow people with locked-in syndrome to communicate independently at home using only their thoughts.
What could go wrong
This is a very early study with only 2 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The implant requires brain surgery and carries risks like infection or device failure.
