Can a ketone drink fuel an aging brain? new study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06767124
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will use combined PET and MRI scans to measure how the brain uses glucose and oxygen in healthy adults and people with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers want to see if a commercially available ketone drink can improve brain energy metabolism. The study involves 17 participants and will compare the effects of the ketone drink to a placebo.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ketone ester drink (Ketone-IQ™)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal how brain energy problems contribute to Alzheimer's and whether a ketone supplement can improve brain metabolism.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage imaging study (17 people) focused on measuring effects, not treating the disease. The ketone drink may show no meaningful change in brain energy use.
