Botox shots in the eye may replace surgery for strabismus
NCT ID NCT07180394
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether injecting Botox into the eye muscles can correct strabismus (misaligned eyes) without surgery. 127 children and adults with small-to-moderate eye turns will receive Botox injections, and their eye alignment will be tracked for a year. The goal is to see if this temporary paralysis leads to lasting improvement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Botulinum toxin (Botox) injection into eye muscles
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a less invasive alternative to surgery for correcting eye misalignment, with lasting improvement even after the drug wears off.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage, non-randomized trial with no control group. The effect is temporary (muscle paralysis lasts weeks), and long-term alignment may not hold for everyone. Risks include double vision, droopy eyelid, or need for repeat injections.
