Blood test may predict Steroid-Induced bone loss
NCT ID NCT06421597
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks for a biomarker to identify people at risk of bone loss from glucocorticoid medications like prednisolone. 36 healthy volunteers will take either prednisolone or a placebo for seven days. Researchers will measure bone turnover markers in blood and collect bone, marrow, and fat samples to find a way to predict individual risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Prednisolone
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a blood test that identifies who is at risk of bone loss from steroid medications, allowing for personalized monitoring or prevention.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study in healthy volunteers, not patients. The biomarker may not work in real-world settings or predict long-term bone loss.
