Bone marrow injection may offer longer hip pain relief than steroids

NCT ID NCT04990128

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a single injection of concentrated bone marrow cells can reduce pain and improve function in people with hip osteoarthritis better than a standard steroid injection. One hundred adults with moderate to severe hip arthritis will be randomly assigned to receive either the bone marrow concentrate or triamcinolone (a steroid) plus lidocaine. The bone marrow group will have marrow drawn from their hip bone, processed, and then injected back into the joint. The steroid group will get a sham procedure to keep them unaware of their treatment. Researchers will track pain, stiffness, and walking ability for up to a year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a longer-lasting pain relief option for hip osteoarthritis without the need for repeated steroid shots.

What could go wrong

This is a single-site, 100-person trial, so results may not apply to everyone. BMAC is a biologic product with variable potency, and its long-term safety and effectiveness are still unproven.
