Simple blood test could spare thousands from unneeded colonoscopies

NCT ID NCT07237984

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new blood test that looks for special molecules called ofCS, which reappear in most colorectal cancers. Researchers will collect blood and stool samples from 2000 people scheduled for a colonoscopy in Denmark. The goal is to see if combining the blood test with existing stool tests can more accurately identify who truly needs a colonoscopy, reducing unnecessary procedures while still catching cancers early.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Blood test for oncofetal chondroitin sulfate-modified proteoglycans (ofCS)

What this could lead to

If successful, this blood test could help doctors decide who really needs a colonoscopy, catching cancers early while avoiding many unnecessary procedures.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with 2000 people in Denmark. The test may not work as well in larger, more diverse groups, and it is not yet proven to reduce harm or save lives.
