Blood markers may reveal why some women get repeat UTIs

NCT ID NCT03819712

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study aims to find blood biomarkers that predict recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. Researchers will collect blood, urine, fecal, and vaginal samples from 109 healthy women aged 18–28, comparing those with a history of single versus recurrent cystitis. The goal is to understand how immune system differences may raise the risk of repeat infections, potentially leading to better prevention strategies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify women at high risk for recurrent UTIs and guide future research into better prevention or treatment.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It is small (109 participants) and only looks at biomarkers, so it won't directly change care.
