Blood biomarkers may let ICU patients stop antifungals earlier
NCT ID NCT03538912
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using blood biomarkers (beta-D-glucan and mannan) can help doctors safely stop antifungal drugs earlier in critically ill patients suspected of a fungal infection. 192 ICU patients were randomly assigned to either a biomarker-guided strategy or standard care. The goal was to see if the biomarker approach could reduce unnecessary antifungal use without increasing the risk of death.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
biomarker-guided strategy (blood tests for fungal markers)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce unnecessary antifungal use in ICU patients, lowering side effects and costs without increasing deaths.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial with 192 patients, so results are available but may not apply to all ICU settings. The biomarker strategy might not be as safe in patients with weak immune systems.
