New lab test could take the guesswork out of antibiotic choice for gum disease
NCT ID NCT03863249
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new lab method (xCELLigence system) to grow oral biofilms and select the most effective antibiotic for each patient with chronic periodontitis. 64 adults with severe gum disease received standard deep cleaning plus an antibiotic chosen by the new test. The goal was to see if this approach improves clinical outcomes like pocket depth and bleeding. The study is complete, but results are not yet reported.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antibiotics (amoxicillin, metronidazole, azithromycin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a faster, more accurate way to choose antibiotics for gum disease, potentially improving outcomes and reducing antibiotic resistance.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed Phase 4 trial focused on developing a lab test, not testing a new treatment. The method may not prove better than current practice in larger, real-world settings.
