Measuring baby fat could improve weight estimates before delivery

NCT ID NCT07575152

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new way to estimate a baby's weight before birth using ultrasound. Instead of only measuring bones, it also measures soft tissue thickness in the belly and thigh. Researchers hope this will give more accurate weight predictions, especially for very large or very small babies. The study will involve 300 full-term pregnant women and compare the new method to traditional measurements.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a more accurate way to estimate fetal weight before birth, helping doctors better manage pregnancies with very large or very small babies.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The new formula may not prove more accurate than existing methods, and results may not apply to all pregnancies.
