New quick test could spot Stroke-Related speech issues faster

NCT ID NCT02548481

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new tool called BESTA, designed to quickly diagnose aphasia (language problems) in people who just had a stroke. Researchers compared BESTA to an existing test in 395 participants, including stroke patients and healthy volunteers. The goal was to see if BESTA is accurate and reliable enough for routine use in hospitals.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a faster, simpler way to diagnose aphasia in stroke patients, helping speech therapy start sooner.

What could go wrong

This is a validation study, not a treatment trial. The tool may not prove more accurate than existing tests, and results may not apply to all stroke patients.
