Skip the fast? new study lets heart patients eat before procedure

NCT ID NCT06996639

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether people having urgent heart catheterization need to fast beforehand. 400 patients with chest pain or mild heart attacks will be randomly assigned to either fast as usual or eat and drink normally. Researchers will measure comfort and safety to see if skipping the fast improves the patient experience without causing harm.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could change hospital policies to allow patients to eat before heart procedures, improving comfort and satisfaction.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study. It may not find a clear benefit, or the no-fasting group could show higher complication rates, reinforcing current fasting guidelines.
