New scanner aims to spot tiny tumors, but study stalls early
NCT ID NCT05513027
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new imaging technique called AWSM-PET/CT that adds a few minutes to a standard PET/CT scan to get clearer pictures of small cancer spots. Researchers planned to enroll cancer patients to see if the new method improved accuracy. However, the study was stopped early after only 11 people took part, so we don't have enough information to know if it works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this technology could help doctors find smaller tumors more accurately, potentially improving cancer staging and treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
The study was terminated early with very few participants, so results are limited. The technique is still experimental and may not work better than standard scans.
