New hope for liver transplant patients: drug boosts low platelets, cuts transfusions

NCT ID NCT07600905

First seen May 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 16, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study looked at whether avatrombopag, a pill that raises platelet counts, is safe and effective for liver transplant patients who develop severe low platelets (thrombocytopenia) right after surgery. Researchers compared 67 patients who received the drug with 67 similar patients who got standard care. The drug helped increase platelet levels faster and reduced the need for blood and platelet transfusions, without raising the risk of blood clots or other serious complications.
