Robot nurse? automated IV pump tested in surgery
NCT ID NCT02138942
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tested a device called the Learning Intravenous Resuscitator (LIR) that automatically gives IV fluids during major abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. The goal was to see if the device could keep blood volume stable as well as a human anesthesiologist. Only 30 patients were planned, but the study was terminated early, so results are limited.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Learning Intravenous Resuscitator (LIR) system (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a device that automatically manages IV fluids during surgery, potentially reducing human error and improving patient stability.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early pilot study that was terminated, so results are limited. The device requires constant supervision and may malfunction or be overridden by the anesthesiologist.
