New 8-Question test could slash autism diagnosis wait times for adults

NCT ID NCT06549179

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a simple 8-item screening tool called the Autism Mental Status Exam (AMSE) can help non-specialist doctors and psychologists identify autism in adults. Currently, adults in France wait an average of 19 months for a diagnosis at expert centers, and many are referred unnecessarily. The study will enroll 410 adults seeking an autism evaluation, and compare the AMSE results from non-experts against a full expert diagnosis to see if the tool is accurate enough for routine screening.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Autism Mental Status Exam (AMSE) screening tool
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a fast, reliable screening tool that non-specialist doctors can use to quickly identify adults who may have autism, reducing wait times for expert diagnosis.
What could go wrong
This is a validation study, not a treatment trial. The tool may not perform as well in real-world settings as it did in small expert-led studies, and it is only a screening step, not a final diagnosis.
