Could a pneumonia drug boost leukemia treatment in kids?

NCT ID NCT03568994

First seen Jan 31, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This early-phase trial tested adding atovaquone (a drug usually used to prevent pneumonia) to standard chemotherapy for children, teens, and young adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The main goals were to see how often doses had to be skipped due to side effects, measure drug levels in the blood, and find out how long it takes to reach steady levels. The study enrolled 26 participants and focused on safety and drug behavior, not on curing the disease.
