New hope for liver transplant patients with recurrent cancer: immunotherapy combo under study
NCT ID NCT06254248
First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 32 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing whether a combination of two drugs, atezolizumab and bevacizumab, can safely treat liver cancer that has come back after a liver transplant. The study includes 50 patients who will receive the drug combo every three weeks along with a strict immunosuppressive regimen to lower the risk of organ rejection. The main goal is to see how many patients experience acute cellular rejection within six months.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Atezolizumab-Bevacizumab (immunotherapy plus anti-angiogenic drug) combined with standard immunosuppressants (tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, corticosteroids, and possibly everolimus)
What this could lead to
If this works, it could offer a new treatment option for liver transplant patients whose cancer has returned, potentially controlling the cancer without causing organ rejection.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 50 participants, and the immunotherapy may still trigger liver rejection despite the added immunosuppression. The results may not apply to all patients.
