Heart valve study: which blood thinner prevents clots best after TAVR?

NCT ID NCT05493657

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compares aspirin and clopidogrel to prevent leaflet thrombosis (blood clots on the valve) in 254 people who had a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for severe aortic stenosis. After 4 weeks of both drugs, participants take either aspirin or clopidogrel alone for 6 months. The main goal is to see which drug reduces valve clots better, checked by CT scan at 3 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Aspirin and clopidogrel

What this could lead to

If successful, this could identify the better single antiplatelet drug to prevent dangerous blood clots on the new heart valve after TAVR, improving long-term safety.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-phase trial (254 people) comparing two common drugs, so the difference may be small or not apply to all patients. The study only follows patients for 6 months, so longer-term effects are unknown.
