Could fish oil and aspirin be the secret to healthier gums?

NCT ID NCT07523841

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding aspirin and omega-3 fatty acids to standard deep-cleaning gum treatment helps people with advanced gum disease (periodontitis). About 120 adults will be randomly assigned to get either standard cleaning alone, cleaning plus omega-3, or cleaning plus both omega-3 and low-dose aspirin. Researchers will measure gum pocket depth, inflammation markers in blood, and bleeding to see if the combination works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Omega-3 fatty acids and low-dose aspirin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a simple, low-cost add-on to standard gum disease treatment that reduces inflammation and improves healing.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study (120 people) with no blinding, so results may not be conclusive. The supplements are generally safe but may cause minor side effects like stomach upset or bleeding risk with aspirin.
