Could a daily aspirin save mothers and babies from hypertension risks?
NCT ID NCT04356326
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking 150 mg of aspirin daily, starting before 20 weeks of pregnancy, can prevent serious problems like preeclampsia, poor fetal growth, placental abruption, preterm birth, and death in pregnant women with chronic high blood pressure. About 500 women will be randomly assigned to receive either aspirin or a placebo. The goal is to find a safe, simple way to improve outcomes for both mother and baby.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Aspirin 150 mg daily
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to prevent life-threatening complications like preeclampsia and preterm birth in pregnant women with chronic hypertension.
What could go wrong
This is a large Phase 3 trial, but aspirin may not reduce risks enough to change practice, and there is a small chance of side effects like bleeding.
