Aspirin study for kidney patients halted: did the risks outweigh the benefits?

NCT ID NCT03796156

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looked at whether taking a daily low-dose aspirin could help prevent a first heart attack or stroke in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aspirin thins the blood to reduce clots but also raises bleeding risk. Over 4,600 adults with CKD from UK clinics were randomly assigned to aspirin or usual care and followed for years. The study was stopped early, and results are being analyzed to see if the benefits of preventing heart attacks and strokes outweigh the bleeding risks.
