Can smelling essential oils and hypnosis ease cancer procedure pain?

NCT ID NCT05714995

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether combining aromatherapy (smelling essential oils) with hypnosis can help cancer patients feel more comfortable during uncomfortable procedures like blood draws or dressing changes. About 66 adults with cancer will be randomly assigned to receive hypnosis alone or hypnosis plus aromatherapy. Researchers will measure comfort levels before and after the procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
essential oils (aromatherapy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to help cancer patients feel more comfortable during uncomfortable procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (66 people) testing a short-term comfort measure, not a treatment for cancer itself. Results may not apply to all patients.
