Blood tests may help decide best time to switch lung cancer drugs
NCT ID NCT02856893
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial tested two drugs, osimertinib and gefitinib, in 156 people with advanced EGFR-mutant lung cancer. The goal was to see if using blood tests (liquid biopsies) to detect genetic changes could help decide when to switch treatments, compared to standard scans. The study also looked at how well osimertinib worked when given early versus later in treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Osimertinib (Tagrisso) and gefitinib (Iressa)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using blood tests to decide when to switch treatments improves outcomes for people with advanced lung cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial with 156 people, so results are not definitive. The approach may not work for everyone, and side effects from these drugs can be serious.
