Summary

This pilot study tested a smartphone app designed with and for adolescents aged 12-17 who are having suicidal thoughts. The app includes a safety plan, coping tools, and direct crisis support. Researchers evaluated how usable and helpful the app felt to 32 participants, and explored changes in coping and suicidal thoughts.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Smartphone app (BackUp for youth) with Safety Plan, HopeBox, psychoeducation, and crisis support

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a practical, evidence-based digital tool to help young people manage suicidal thoughts and access support.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (32 participants) with no control group, so it cannot prove the app reduces suicidal thoughts. Results may not apply to all teens.
