Could your phone diagnose sleep apnea? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06578390
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a smartphone app called Apneal can accurately diagnose sleep apnea in adults who already need an overnight sleep test. About 500 participants will wear the app on their chest while also undergoing standard polysomnography at home. The goal is to see if the app can correctly classify sleep apnea severity and measure key breathing events.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Apneal smartphone app (device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a convenient, at-home way to diagnose sleep apnea without needing a full sleep lab visit.
- What could go wrong
- The app is still being tested against standard methods, and its accuracy may not match lab-based testing. The trial is not yet complete, so results are uncertain.
