Could a simple pill replace daily shots for clot prevention after cancer surgery?
NCT ID NCT07189897
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether apixaban (a pill taken twice a day) is a safe and more satisfying alternative to enoxaparin (a daily shot) for preventing blood clots after head and neck cancer surgery. About 76 adults will take one of the two medicines for 10 days after surgery. Researchers will track side effects, patient satisfaction, and how well participants stick to the treatment plan.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- apixaban (pill) and enoxaparin (shot)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that a simple pill is a safe and more convenient alternative to daily shots for preventing blood clots after head and neck cancer surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study (76 people), so results may not apply to everyone. It compares two existing drugs, not a new breakthrough, and side effects are possible with both.
