New study tests simpler procedure for stomach precancer
NCT ID NCT07161479
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two endoscopic procedures—argon plasma coagulation (APC) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)—for treating small (1 cm or smaller) precancerous growths in the stomach called gastric adenomas with low-grade dysplasia. About 160 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either APC or EMR. The main goal is to see if APC is as effective as EMR at preventing the growth from coming back, while possibly being safer and faster.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Argon plasma coagulation (APC) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) are both procedures used to remove precancerous growths in the stomach.
- What this could lead to
- If APC works as well as EMR, it could offer a simpler, safer, and cheaper option for treating small precancerous stomach growths.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial (160 people) and results may not apply to larger or more advanced growths. APC does not provide a tissue sample, so there is a risk of incomplete removal or recurrence.
