Can a simple wash stop the bacteria behind shoulder surgery infections?
NCT ID NCT06831422
First seen Sep 18, 2026 · Last updated Sep 18, 2026
Summary
Researchers are testing whether washing the surgical site with antimicrobial solutions after the first cut lowers the amount of Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium commonly found on the skin, during shoulder replacement surgery. Adults scheduled for a first shoulder replacement are randomly assigned to one of four groups: a novel antimicrobial wash, hydrogen peroxide, povidone-iodine, or no wash. The team takes samples from the skin, the deeper tissue, the joint, and the operating room air, then watches for bacterial growth for up to 18 days. They also track complications and any need for further surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- antimicrobial washes applied to the skin and deeper tissue during shoulder replacement surgery, including a novel antimicrobial wash, hydrogen peroxide, and povidone-iodine
- What this could lead to
- If one wash proves better at clearing Cutibacterium acnes, surgeons could adopt it to lower the risk of infection after shoulder replacement.
- What could go wrong
- The trial measures bacterial cultures, not actual infections, so fewer bacteria may not translate into fewer complications. Each wash can also irritate tissue or cause allergic reactions.
