Can a super antibiotic stop surgery infections?

NCT ID NCT07620223

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving a stronger antibiotic (piperacillin-tazobactam) before liver surgery can prevent surgical site infections better than the standard antibiotic (cefuroxime) in hospitals with high antibiotic resistance. About 378 adults having planned liver surgery will take part. The main goal is to see how many people get an infection within 30 days after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Piperacillin-tazobactam

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a stronger antibiotic is better at preventing infections after liver surgery in hospitals where many germs are resistant to standard drugs.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial, so results may not apply everywhere. The stronger antibiotic may cause more side effects or not reduce infections significantly.
