Could a simple antibiotic keep blood cancer patients out of the hospital?

NCT ID NCT07528417

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether taking a daily antibiotic (levofloxacin) can safely reduce infections in people with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are receiving chemotherapy as outpatients. The trial will randomly assign 75 participants to either levofloxacin or usual care for 90 days. The main goal is to see if such a study is feasible, while also tracking infection rates and severity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Levofloxacin (an antibiotic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that taking a daily antibiotic helps prevent serious infections in people with MDS or AML receiving outpatient chemotherapy, potentially reducing hospital stays and improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not yet on proving effectiveness. Levofloxacin may cause side effects or contribute to antibiotic resistance, and results may not apply to all patients.
