Could one injection during cataract surgery prevent diabetic eye disease worsening?

NCT ID NCT07301775

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether a single injection of the drug Aflibercept given during cataract surgery works as well as three injections (one during surgery and two more over the next two months) to stop diabetic retinopathy from getting worse. The trial will include 166 diabetic patients aged 40 and older who have non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. Researchers will track changes in eye health over six months to see which approach better prevents disease progression.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Aflibercept (Eylea) injection

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a single injection during cataract surgery is enough to prevent diabetic retinopathy from getting worse, reducing the need for extra injections.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 166 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study is not yet recruiting, and there is a risk of side effects from the injections, such as eye inflammation or infection.
