Ultrasound vs. MRI: which spots fetal gut trouble better?
NCT ID NCT03968107
First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 02, 2026 · Updated 17 times
Summary
This study looked at whether a third-trimester ultrasound can find signs of a serious gut condition called malrotation, which can lead to a life-threatening twist (volvulus) in unborn babies. Researchers compared ultrasound results to fetal MRI, the current gold standard, in 77 pregnant women. The goal was to see if ultrasound could reliably locate key intestinal structures and help identify higher-risk cases.
