Does anesthesia choice affect immune cells during breast cancer surgery?
NCT ID NCT06151639
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed study looked at how two different anesthesia methods—general anesthesia and a nerve block called PECS block—affect certain immune cells in the blood of 50 women with breast cancer undergoing lumpectomy. The goal was to see if one method might be better for the immune system. The study measured changes in white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets before and after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
general anesthesia and PECS block (nerve block procedure)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help doctors choose anesthesia methods that better support the immune system during breast cancer surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. It only looked at blood cell counts, not long-term outcomes.
