Personalized cell transplant aims to keep leukemia at bay

NCT ID NCT00534469

Summary

This study tested a treatment to help prevent acute myeloid leukemia (AML) from returning after initial remission. For patients aged 60 or younger, doctors used high-dose chemotherapy and radiation to wipe out the bone marrow, then gave back the patient's own previously collected healthy stem cells to rebuild it. The goal was to see if this intensive procedure, followed by a drug to boost the immune system, could improve long-term survival without the cancer coming back.
