Scientists test ultrasound to penetrate brain barrier in ALS patients

NCT ID NCT03321487

Summary

This small study tested whether focused ultrasound could safely and temporarily open the blood-brain barrier in people with ALS. The blood-brain barrier normally protects the brain but can block potential treatments. Researchers wanted to see if this technique was feasible and safe in four ALS patients, measuring any side effects and confirming the barrier opened using MRI scans.
