Almonds vs. vitamin d: a nutty new way to heal broken bones?
NCT ID NCT07153302
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether eating almonds can help heal broken thigh and shin bones as effectively as vitamin D supplements, but with fewer side effects and lower cost. The trial will include 136 adults with these fractures, who will receive either almonds, vitamin D, or both, and their bone healing will be tracked with X-rays over 13 weeks. The goal is to see if almonds can be a safe, affordable alternative for bone fracture recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
sweet almonds (Prunus dulcis)
What this could lead to
If it works, almonds could offer a safe, low-cost alternative to vitamin D supplements for helping bone fractures heal.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 136 people. Almonds may not work as well as vitamin D, and eating too many can cause side effects. Results may not apply to everyone.
