Gum disease breakthrough? own blood gel may boost healing

NCT ID NCT07363135

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a gel made from patients' own blood, called albumin platelet-rich fibrin (Alb-PRF), can improve gum healing after deep cleaning for advanced gum disease. Twenty-three adults with Stage 3 periodontitis received the gel in deep gum pockets on one side of the mouth, while the other side got standard cleaning alone. Researchers measured gum pocket depth, attachment levels, and growth factors over 6 months to see if the gel leads to better tissue repair.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

albumin platelet-rich fibrin (Alb-PRF) gel

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a better way to heal gums and bone after deep cleaning, reducing tooth loss from advanced gum disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 23 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The gel is experimental and may not improve healing over standard care.
