Could a simple protein boost stroke recovery? major trial underway
NCT ID NCT07263308
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving the protein albumin (given as an IV drip for four days) along with standard clot-removal treatment helps people recover better after a severe stroke caused by a large blockage. About 1,200 adults aged 18-80 with anterior circulation strokes will be enrolled. The main goal is to see if more people can live independently or return to their previous level of function 90 days later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Albumin (a protein given intravenously)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new, widely available treatment to improve recovery after a severe stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a large Phase 3 trial, but albumin has not been proven effective for stroke before. There is a risk of side effects like fluid overload or allergic reactions.
