First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests a virtual reality (VR) therapy session guided by an AI-powered virtual therapist to help reduce depression symptoms. Sixty Chinese young adults with mild to severe depression will either receive the VR therapy or join a waitlist. The goal is to see if this digital approach can make cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) more accessible and engaging.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
AI-powered virtual reality cognitive behavioral therapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a more accessible and interactive digital therapy option for depression, reducing stigma and cost barriers.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The virtual therapist may not be as effective as in-person therapy, and long-term benefits are unknown.
