Smart toothbrush takes on gum disease: AI vs electric vs manual
NCT ID NCT07308522
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This 6-week study tests whether an AI-based toothbrush (Xiaomi T501) with pressure sensing and coaching removes more plaque and reduces gum bleeding than a standard electric or manual toothbrush. Thirty-three adults with plaque-induced gingivitis will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. The goal is to see if smart technology improves brushing habits and gum health beyond what standard brushes already achieve.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-based sonic toothbrush (Xiaomi T501) with pressure sensing and coaching
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that an AI-guided toothbrush improves plaque removal and gum health better than standard electric or manual brushes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 33 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The AI feature may not add significant benefit over a standard electric brush.
