AI takes the Dentist's chair: computer designs tooth replacements in minutes
NCT ID NCT05056948
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether artificial intelligence (AI) can automatically design a single-tooth dental crown by learning from a patient's other teeth. Researchers removed a virtual tooth from 3D scans of 250 people and let the AI predict the missing tooth's shape and position. The goal was to see if AI could save time and create a better-fitting prosthesis compared to manual design.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
artificial intelligence (AI) computer-assisted design (CAD) software
What this could lead to
If successful, this AI system could speed up the design of dental crowns and reduce the time patients spend in the dentist's chair.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study focused on design accuracy, not on long-term fit or patient outcomes. The AI may not work for all tooth shapes or dental conditions.
