AI as a second set of eyes: could it sharpen pneumonia detection on chest X-Rays?

NCT ID NCT07744555

First seen Aug 04, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether an artificial intelligence system can help less-experienced doctors—like final-year medical students and early-career general practitioners—interpret chest X-rays more accurately. Participants will read the same set of X-rays twice: once with AI assistance and once without, to see if the AI improves their ability to spot and classify pulmonary opacities (signs of pneumonia). The study focuses on diagnostic accuracy and confidence, not on treatment decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Artificial intelligence-based expert system for computer-aided interpretation of chest radiographs
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a practical tool that helps less-experienced doctors spot pneumonia on chest X-rays more accurately, potentially improving diagnosis in settings where expert radiologists are scarce.
What could go wrong
This is a small study (50 participants) and the AI is only a decision-support tool—doctors still make the final call. The results may not generalize to all clinical settings, and the AI could potentially mislead if its output is incorrect.
