Summary

Researchers are testing whether an AI-powered chatbot can help community smokers quit. The trial enrolls adults who smoke daily and have a smartphone with WeChat. Participants receive either chatbot support or standard advice and self-help materials. The study measures quit rates at 3 and 6 months using biochemical tests to confirm abstinence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
AI-powered chatbot support for smoking cessation, compared with standard advice and self-help materials
What this could lead to
If effective, this AI chatbot could offer a scalable, low-cost tool to help smokers quit, potentially reducing smoking-related diseases in communities.
What could go wrong
This is an early feasibility study, so the chatbot may not outperform standard advice. Success depends on engagement, and results may not generalize beyond the specific community.
