ER ultrasound trick could speed up breathing trouble diagnosis

NCT ID NCT07324980

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a quick ultrasound of a large vein (the inferior vena cava) can help emergency doctors figure out why a patient is having sudden trouble breathing. The goal is to tell apart fluid in the lungs from heart problems versus other causes. Researchers will enroll 200 adults in the ER and combine the vein ultrasound with lung and heart scans and blood tests to see if this approach is more accurate.
